Before I began working remotely I used to receive in the region of a couple of hundred electronic mails in 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I receive greater than 4. To ‘restart’ my electronic mail experience I altered my e-mail address and obsessively took precautions to protect the details being made known to anyone. I then ‘trained’ everyone who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it wisely and sparingly. I also created an automatic reply that swiftly informed anyone sending me mail at what time of day I would be reading mail and if an item needed my immediate attention to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

2. Get rid of alerts.

Disable every function that can send you a perceptible alert. This includes cell and
ordinary handsets and forms of alerts from electronic mail such as on screen pop ups, audible warnings, display changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your work room and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as many jobs require us to go to their employers premises or travel to perform their duties in person. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and offer some practical advice by putting it on the Internet with the sole objective of providing useful timesavers for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I would caution you that there are many so called ’experts’ out there who will try and sell you guides for big sums of money, believe me you don’t need to do this.

I am privileged to be permitted to work anywhere I choose and just about everybody who asks me what work I do wants to learn how I am able to work remotely. Don’t get me wrong here I am still perfecting the science of remote working as all of the time I meet folks on the net who tell me about new knowledge and I am constantly discovering new packages and ways that make my life easier and make me more efficient.

Over the past seven years I have steadily adapted my working practices to let me to do just about all of my work remotely with a selection of web tools and unfaltering self discipline. One late night whilst browsing the web I came across Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. My discovery of online ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a ‘light bulb’ moment for me and the launch pad of my ‘remote working life.

I must tell you up front that successfully working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means educating your co-workers, superiors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will interact with you.

Don’t get the wrong idea I am still developing the art of remote working as everyday I encounter persons on the net who tell me about new knowledge and I am repeatedly unearthing new tools and ways that make my life easier and make me more efficient.
